Institutions where foreclosed real-estate balances are growing QoQ
Institutions whose Other Real Estate Owned (OREO) balance — foreclosed property held on the books — grew the most this quarter relative to total assets. A rising OREO balance signals the back-end of the credit-loss cycle, where workouts have converted to property held for sale.

Methodology
Other Real Estate Owned (OREO) is property an institution has taken onto its balance sheet through foreclosure or deed-in-lieu, held pending sale. A rising OREO balance is a late-cycle stress signal — workouts that have finished the foreclosure process and turned into property the institution must now sell. This card ranks banks and credit unions together by the quarter-over-quarter change in OREO as a share of total assets, and surfaces the top 50 whose share rose at least 0.001 (0.1 percentage points). For banks (FDIC-insured): OREO — FFIEC Call Report Schedule RC-M item 3f (RCON2150; RC-M items are reported on the RCON basis only); total assets denominator — Schedule RC (RCFD2170 / RCON2170). For credit unions: foreclosed and repossessed commercial assets (NCUA ACCT_AS0022) plus consumer real estate (ACCT_AS0023), excluding repossessed vehicles and other consumer assets; total assets denominator — NCUA ACCT_010. Comparing banks with credit unions: bank OREO and credit-union foreclosed real estate are broadly analogous — both capture property held after foreclosure — but bank Schedule RC-M item 3f also includes former bank premises and other repossessed real estate that credit unions report in separate accounts. Quarter-over-quarter changes are comparable; point-in-time totals are approximate. Methodology updated 2026-03-31: bank OREO balances now come directly from FFIEC Call Report Schedule RC-M item 3f (RCON2150). Earlier quarters used the ORE fields in FDIC BankFind financial data. The two should agree within tolerance; this changes the source, not the reported values. Read the methodology update note at /blog/npl-explorer-fdic-cdr-direct-sourcing. Methodology updated 2026-09-27: credit-union foreclosed real estate now comes from NCUA's foreclosed-asset detail (ACCT_AS0022 + ACCT_AS0023). Earlier snapshots read ACCT_798, which NCUA no longer populates, so credit unions showed none.
