Methodology

We rank U.S. states by the quarter-over-quarter change in their loan-weighted nonperforming-loan ratio. Each institution's ratio is weighted by its total loans, so larger institutions move the state number more, and each institution counts toward its headquarters state. The minimum change is 0: any state where the ratio rose appears. Institution-level inputs: bank nonperforming volumes — FFIEC Call Report Schedule RC-N line 9, 90+ days past due col B (RCFD1407 / RCON1407) plus nonaccrual col C (RCFD1403 / RCON1403); bank total loans denominator — Schedule RC-C line 12 (RCFD2122 / RCON2122). Credit-union 60+ days delinquent volumes — NCUA ACCT_041B (direct aggregate); credit-union total loans denominator — NCUA ACCT_025B. Comparing banks with credit unions: state figures blend bank "non-current" loans and credit-union "60+ days delinquent" loans — the closest measures the two filings share, not exact equivalents. Methodology updated 2026-03-31: the bank nonperforming volumes behind the state figures now come directly from FFIEC Call Report Schedule RC-N rather than an approximation derived from BankFind ratios.
