Quote from Roman on March 28, 2024, 6:20 pmQuestion from a beginner about Payment Pattern ("advanced due diligence", Chapter 07 "Credit report").
The first digit in the top row is the current month
1 – Pays as agreed (current)
2 – 30–59 days past the due date
3 – 60–89 days past the due date
4 – 90–119 days past the due date
5 – 120 days or more past the due dateWhen I look at a real credit report, I can see something like following:
Months 1-12: 11EEEEEEEEEE
Months 13-24: EEEEEEEEEEEE
Months 25-36: E11111111111
Months 37-48: 111111111111Questions:
1. "Months 1-12" - Is this data from the current (last) year or is this the beginning of the credit period, judging by the number?
2. What does the letter "E" mean?Next real example:
Months 1-12: XX555555555X
Months 13-24: 11XX1111XXXX
Months 25-36: XXXXXXXXXXXX
Months 37-48: XXXXX1111122
Questions:
3. What does the letter "Х" mean?
4. I know that "5 – 120 days or more past the due date". How is it possible to immediately get a "5" without getting 2, 3 and 4?
Please see the file attached for details

I'll answer where I can...
1) "Months 1-12" is the current year. The leftmost entry is the last reported status. But check the date record to be sure exactly which month that is. On this report I think it's the 'Verified' Date.
2) I have no idea.
3) "X" means the creditor didn't report. From your sample you see XX5555.... The record also shows the acct was closed 12/23 so the X's are for Jan and Feb.
4) That seems a bit odd. I would normally expect the delinquency to progress 1-2-3-4-5 as you say. But, notice that you have a few X's as gaps in this case. It may be the timing of reporting as the loan was transferred between 2-3 servicers and 1's incorrectly reported. Just a guess but the point is, they aren't paying now.As a side note, I would not recommend posting credit report snippets unless those account #'s are redacted.

The "L", "Y" & "E" are a bit confusing because while every credit vendor has a "data dictionary" or "key" to their various reporting codes, the Transunion guide here doesn't include any detail about these letters as they relate to the "MOP (Current Manner of Payment)"
When I come across these unknown letters in the pay string, I will first check the Verified Date to make sure we're looking at a recently reported trade line and then look into the other details for clues (Remarks, Balance, Past Due, etc). If it is still a mystery, unfortunately we'll have to mark the status as Unknown until we are able to get a recent statement from the borrower or possibly get lucky with data from the lender/servicer's automated phone system (as described under Senior Lien Status section here: Proactive Portfolio Monitoring).
As for Nick's suggestion to redact account numbers, that is definitely a good idea however in this case since there is no borrower name or address, I think this is OK - we're also all under NDA in this private forum so that is good. Either way, confidentiality is critical (never post SSN#s of course)!
